Meizu M8 captured on video looking smooth, doing multitouch

Oh M8, you've grown up before our eyes. It seems like just yesterday we were looking at your early incarnations and their uncanny similarity to certain other devices. And how could we forget those times we spent together waiting for you at trade shows, and mocking checking out your early hardware? And now look at you, all grown up and caught on video doing your thing. You know what? This actually looks pretty damn nice. Sure, the obvious major iPhone influence is still there, but we have to say, Jack Wong and co. have done a pretty good job of smoothing out this UI -- and we didn't expect to see multitouch working this nicely. Of course, the clip says more than we ever could, so go and wrap yourself in your grandmother's afghan, grab a steaming cup of coffee, head out to the porch of your 19th century farmhouse, and just listen to the wind chimes and smooth sounds of this video as you take a tour of the Meizu M8... after the break.

Jeff DunhamYou would think that the highest-rated Comedy Central show of all-time would either be an episode of South Park or one of the nightly news satire programs, The Daily Show or The Colbert Report. It's actually none of those. The biggest audience-getter was a Christmas special featuring various puppets.

The Sunday debut of Jeff Dunham's Very Special Christmas Special grabbed 6. 6 million viewers. South Park held the record before and is now in second place.

This Week in HTML 5: Video tag changes

Mark Pilgrim is back telling us what is new in the world of HTML 5 and focuses on changes with the video tag and API:

The big news this week is a major revamping of how browsers should process multimedia in the <audio> and <video> elements.

r2404 makes a number of important changes. First, the canPlayType() method has moved from the navigator object to HTMLMediaElement (i.e. a specific <audio> or <video> element), and it now returns a string rather than an integer. [canPlayType() discussion]

The canPlayType(type) method must return the string “no” if type is a type that the user agent knows it cannot render; it must return “probably” if the user agent is confident that the type represents a media resource that it can render if used in with this audio or video element; and it must return “maybe” otherwise. Implementors are encouraged to return “maybe” unless the type can be confidently established as being supported or not. Generally, a user agent should never return “probably” if the type doesn’t have a codecs parameter.

Wait, what codecs parameter? That’s the second major change: the <source type> attribute (which previously could only contain a MIME type like “video/mp4″, which is insufficient to determine playability) can now contain a MIME type and a codecs parameter. As specified in RFC 4281, the codecs parameter specifies the specific codecs used by the individual streams within the audio/video container. The section on the type attribute contains several examples of using the codecs parameter.

Video and the Open Web is a huge issue. The idea of having video be a native object that other components can integrate with (e.g. rotate in canvas) is great. We need codecs implemented. We need penetration. We need more.

ConvertMyTube.com - Convert YouTube Videos

In their own words

“Convert online YouTube videos direct to PC, iPod, iPhone, PSP and Mobile.”

Why it might be a killer

It is a simple yet effective tool that can be used freely.

Some questions

How could this web-based solution be improved?

What it does

There is a fair number of online applications that aim to make the experience of using YouTube a more realized one. Preeminently among them are the tools for capturing and converting video files stored at the popular hosting service. The one we are discussing right now falls squarely into that category.

In general terms, all you have to do is cut and paste the corresponding YouTube URL into the provided box and hit the “Convert & Download” button. It is really as easy as that. There is not a lot to worry about, but there is not a lot to configure either. In a certain sense, I guess that is the idea of the site. And the one aspect that can be modified is actually the one that should not be bypassed, namely the file extension. This is important if only because it will enable you to rest assured the converted file will be viewable in different setups (like PCs and Macs) and devices (like iPods and iPhones).

At the end of the day, it is always nice to know that there are free services like this one available on the WWW. You always end up needing them when least expected, and that is a fact.

SC08 Video: Ciena Demo of 100-Gigabit Data Transfer

I’m a geek groupie when it comes to technology. I can’t actually produce any of these life-changing products, but I can recognize something cool when I see it. And the 100-Gigabit data transfer demo that Ciena was showing off at SC 08 in Austin, Texas, today was very cool. Unlike previous demonstrations, Ciena’s was a 100-Gigabit data transfer over a single channel, rather than one aggregated over multiple channels.

The product isn’t available for commercial use yet (and there’s no date set for when it will be), but when it is, customers will be able to upgrade their existing fiber equipment with the Ciena kit to 100G. Other players, from Infinera to Alcatel-Lucent, are also trying to deliver 100G networks. Those speeds will help the core network handle the anticipated growth of Internet traffic, and lower the per-bit cost of delivering that traffic. In the video below, Dimple Amin, vice president of R&D and special projects at Ciena, talks about the demonstration, what it does and how far such traffic can travel. He also says there’s no technical reason why these speeds couldn’t be delivered at the edge of  the network to consumers’ homes. That would be the day.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic video review is probably longer than you think

We've seen a review of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, and several videos of the device in action. What we haven't seen, however, is a video review... until now. Over at MobileBurn they've posted a series of four review videos of the touchscreen handset, and though it starts out a bit shaky -- the stylus is "not very good" and the build doesn't feel very "solid" -- the reviewer changes his tune by the end of the opus, and his opinion seems like it's evolved to a resounding "not bad." Hit the read link, grab a bucket of popcorn and consider yourself in for the night if you want to watch the full review.

Here's a sneak peek at the new Cupid - VIDEO

CupidFans might remember the original TV show Cupid, which starred Jeremy Piven long before Entourage made him a household name and he won a bunch of Emmy awards. It was about a seemingly ordinary guy who might just have been the magical guy who gets lovers together (or maybe he was just crazy). There's a new version coming to ABC from Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas, and the trailer for the show is after the jump.

This one stars Bobby Cannavale, and it seems to be...quirkier than the original? Not that the original wasn't quirky, but there was something very down to earth about it. This one seems like it might be forcing that quirkiness. I'm not sure if it's going to be a comedy, a drama, or the dreaded dramedy, so I'll throw it in both categories. It has a good cast though.

Studio 60 fans will recognize Sarah Paulson. I'm sure her character will be just as beloved in this show as she was in that one.
