'Alice In Wonderland' Wins Its Second Weekend In The Sunday Box Office Report

1. "Alice in Wonderland" ($62 million) 2. "Green Zone" ($14.5 million) 3. "She's Out of My League" ($9.6 million) 4. "Remember Me" ($8.3 million) 5. "Shutter Island" ($8.1 million)
Even with four new wide releases in theaters this weekend, director Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" proved its staying power by claiming the gold medal at this weekend's box office. Suffering a 46.6% drop from last weekend's $116.1 million intake, "Alice" still managed an impressive $62 million stateside result. Combined with foreign box office numbers, "Alice" has made $429.6 million worldwide in just two weeks.
Director Paul Greengrass and actor Matt Damon's "Green Zone" opened in second place with $14.5 million. The Iraq War thriller cost a hefty $100 million to produce, so the meager debut isn't exactly a best case scenario for the "Bourne" collaborators or Universal Pictures.
Comedian Jay Baruchel's turn to leading man status in "She's Out of My League" was able to outmatch "Twilight" star Robert Pattinson's "Remember Me." The romantic comedy won third place with $9.6 million, while Pattinson's romantic drama earned $8.3 million.
"Shutter Island" continued its successful path by hanging in the top five for its third weekend in a row. Director Martin Scorsese and star Leonardo DiCaprio's thriller managed $8.1 million by Sunday's end, bringing the Paramount film's domestic total to $108 million.
For the first time since its December debut, James Cameron's "Avatar" fell out of the top five this weekend. Seeing as how just about every single moviegoer in the world has already made the trip to Pandora, however, it's doubtful that anybody at Fox is mourning the film's $6.6 million seventh place finish.

Good morning and welcome to your Sunday Morning liveblog of the televised political charlie foxtrotting. My name is Jason, and, apparently not everyone got the word that I would be away last Sunday, and the liveblog on hold for a week. But that was what was going on here last Sunday. Sorry about that!
And I'm really sorry that we're still talking about health care reform! Jeez-o-flips! I thought if I went away for a week this whole matter would be taken care of. A watched pot never boils, and all that! And when I returned to find the internets talking about the effects of modern telecommunication on transgressive prison sex, I thought we had moved on, successfully. But no.
I think it took South Africa a shorter amount of time to end apartheid, didn't it?
Anyway, you know the drill. I write this, you stay in bed. Of if you don't, you can email or leave a comment or follow me on the Twitter, for fun.

Like Jason Voorhees in Friday the 13th, the public option rose from the grave this week (instead of slashing teenage victims, it would slash health care costs). With zero input from the White House, 41 Senators have agreed to support a public option via reconciliation. Ryan Grim lays out how that can easily become 50 -- and Dick Durbin has promised to "aggressively whip" a health care bill that includes a public option. But Nancy Pelosi won't include it in the reconciliation package. Why? She claims it's because the Senate doesn't "have the votes" -- which could also be said about the House passing the Senate bill (Stupak, anyone?). So the Senate blames the House, the House blames the Senate, the White House acts as if it doesn't have a say in the matter, and the insurance companies -- lacking real competition -- keep laughing all the way to the bank.
