It's not your usual phone show, it's presented by Jon from TehkSeven who does an awesome job at mixing mobile news and comedy. It's already got almost 5,000 faithful subscribers who tune in for every show. I'm sure that before long, Phoneage will be THE Youtube phone show. Brink trailer showcases acrobatic, lanky dudes

Whomever compiled this Brink trailer must have enjoyed themself some Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, because we swear we've only seen dudes stylishly dodge projectiles like that in a Hideo Kojima game. But, we digress. There are plenty of other noteworthy things, but if you're looking for actual in-game footage, you won't find it throughout the three minutes of video above. But, hey, if the CG is any indication, there will be lots of action to look forward to in Brink. That and curiously tall, acrobatic gentlemen wearing a variety of neat masks.

German student shows off camera-based input on an iPhone

Using a camera as an input device is hardly a new idea -- even on a mobile device -- but most examples so far have been to enable functionality not possible on a touchscreen. As Master's student Daniel Bierwirth has shown in the video after the break, however, a phone on a camera can also be used as an alternative input method for features like scrolling or zooming, potentially allowing for easier interaction on devices with smaller screens. Bierwirth also takes the idea one step further, and sees the system eventually including a second camera that's worn by a person, which would be able to detect when your hands are near the phone and allow for a range of other gestures. Check out his full report at the link below.

Six New Shows Coming to Nickelodeon

I left the Nickelodeon demographic many, many (too many) years ago, but I'll admit that there are still some shows on the cable channel that I watch. They're mostly in the nighttime schedule though: some 'Fairly OddParents,' some 'SpongeBob,' maybe an episode of 'George Lopez' or 'Malcolm in the Middle' once in a while. So there aren't a lot of shows on the list of new shows coming to the channel that I'm interested in seeing (well, maybe one...) 'Victorious' sounds a lot like 'High School Musical,' as its about a teen girl who goes to an elite arts school where everyone sings and dances; 'Kung Fu Panda' is based on the movie; 'Planet Sheen' has a character from 'Jimmy Neutron' stuck on another planet; 'T.U.F.F. Puppy' is about a group of superhero dogs; and 'Bubble Guppies' (which sounds like a medical problem) is an animated show for kids set in an underwater classroom. The only show I might be interested in is 'House of Anubis,' since it's about a group of people who go around Europe looking for clues to a mystery and sounds a little like 'National Treasure' or 'The Da Vinci Code.' It's produced in Europe.

Greetings humans! If you've seen The Engadget Show, then you've been privy to some pretty incredible performances by a group of musicians and artists who eschew familiar instruments in exchange for hacked and modded handheld gaming devices. We grabbed our cameras and got a brief look at the history of the chiptunes movement, the difference between Game Boy music and music from Game Boys, and most importantly, how these artists and visualists make it all happen. Kick back and take a look at the segment (featuring the likes of Glomag, Paris, and Outpt) -- you'll be glad you did! Four floors of art: The Into the Pixel GDC 10 show

The Into the Pixel art exhibit opened last night here in San Francisco. The show is being held at the Hotel des Arts and contains four floors worth of artwork.

Among the artwork on display are various pieces printed on LTL PRINTS, which are wall graphics that are basically giant stickers but can be moved around up to 100 times without losing their stickyness. Plus, they don't leave any kind of sticky residue behind.

One of the floors of the Hotel des Arts also contained some of the pieces that are going on display tonight at Game Over III. Pretty neat that both art shows decided to team up!

Check out the gallery below to see what's on display. The show is on display until April so be sure to check it out if you're in the neighborhood!

Your Local News Is Terrible, Studies Show

Jay Rosen points his Twitter followers in the direction of a study done by the Norman Lear Center at the University of Southern California's Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, which analyzed the content offered by local news programs. Its findings? Well, if you've ever suspected that your local news was terrible, guess what? Suspicions confirmed.

The Lear Center recorded two weeks worth of news from the eight stations broadcasting local news content in the Los Angeles market, for a total yield of 490 hours of news and 11,253 news stories. What did viewers get? Advertising! Eight minutes and 25 seconds worth of advertising every 30 minutes. By contrast, the average amount of time given to local news was eight minutes and 17 seconds.

And how did that local news time break down? By far, the biggest feature of local news coverage was crime. Hey, you there sitting at home probably weren't the victim of a crime. But somebody, somewhere was! AND YOU MIGHT BE NEXT, STORY AT ELEVEN.

Meanwhile, your local government woke up that morning and made a bunch of decisions thatdidaffect your life. But if you blink, you might miss those stories. As Lear Center director Martin Kaplan puts it, "They say 'if it bleeds, it leads,' but apparently that doesn't include the red ink bleeding from Los Angeles government, which only got one out of a hundred lead stories." As compared to the one out of every three broadcasts that led with crime.

WATCH:

As Rosen points out, the total time given in a typical half-hour of news to stories about local government and the local economy is less time than what's given toteasers.

Lehman Report Shows Creative Accounting

In a 2,200-page report released yesterday, a court examiner said that Lehman Bros.’ former CEO Dick Fuld, three CFOs, and auditor may be held liable for certain aspects of the company’s collapse, thanks to some artistic accounting. MarketWatch sums up the report’s most important findings:

The report cited a practice known internally as “Repo 105,” in which Lehman allegedly used repurchase agreements — the temporary exchange of assets for cash — that were structured as sales so that the leverage could be moved off the firm’s balance sheet…Lehman may have already been insolvent on Sept. 2, 2008, almost two weeks before its Sept. 15 bankruptcy filing rocked the financial world and helped send the stock market into a nosedive.

“…unbeknownst to the investing public, rating agencies, government regulators, and Lehman’s board of directors, Lehman reverse engineered the firm’s net leverage ratio for public consumption,” the report said.

A Reuters report quoted an attorney representing Fuld as saying the former CEO “did not know what those transactions were” and that “he didn’t structure them or negotiate them, nor was he aware of their accounting treatment.”

The Valukas report also said evidence exists to support a professional malpractice claim against Lehman auditor Ernst & Young, as the firm “took no steps to question or challenge the non-disclosure by Lehman of its use of $50 billion of temporary, off-balance sheet transactions,” according to the Journal.

Bloomberg Television has a good interview with former Lehman CEO Brad Hintz. I found Hintz’s comments about his former CEO Dick Fuld (they start at 4 minutes 45 seconds) especially telling. Hintz is careful when he talks about his former coworker, but does reveal that Fuld’s more controlling aspects, as well Wall Street’s tendency to let minor statement incursions, for lack of better terms, slide.

Carnegie Mellon student shows that 64 pixels is enough for Mario (video)

There are 2,073,600 pixels in a 1080p TV, yet Carnegie Mellon student Chloe Fan has blown our minds by showing that you only need 64 of them to have a little fun with Super Mario Bros. She wired an Arduino to an 8 x 8 LED matrix through a breadboard, then scaled the first level of the game down to a resolution that makes the 160 x 144 resolution Game Boy look positively high def. The controls are similarly simplified: one button to move Mario (the slightly more orange dot) right, and a second to jump. She also wired up a separate board to play the game's theme song, as you can see in the embed below, but be aware: the video ends before the theme song does, meaning you'll be humming it to yourself all day long.
