Minnesota Recount Begins, Both Coleman And Franken Have Lost Votes

FiveThiryEight is monitoring the the recount of the Minnesota Senate race between Democrat Al Franken and Republican Norm Coleman. So far, it's not going well for either of them.
The Minnesota recount has started, with the results being updated in semi-real time on the Star Tribune's webpage. Thus far, with about 5 percent of the ballots recounted, Coleman has lost 55 votes and Franken has lost 61.
The reason the vote totals are going down when you might intuitively expect them to go up is that either candidate has a right to challenge any ballot for any reason, even if it had been counted as legal originally. When a vote is challenged, it is deducted from the opposing candidate's total. These challenged votes will go before the state canvassing board in December and be debated (and debated and debated) one by one (by one by one). Thus far, Coleman has issued 79 challenges and Franken 61, a rate that puts us on pace for about 2,800 challenges statewide.
You can monitor the recount numbers yourself here.

Observations: Tribute to lost leader of EST

Few artists get to change the very definition of the form in which they work, but the Swedish trio EST's mix of lyricism and thunder, shaped by its leader Esbjorn Svensson's brilliantly melodic compositions and underpinned by the group's telepathic improvisations, permanently redefined the boundaries of jazz. Even fewer artists opt to step off the production line that is leading them to success. But Svensson was no ordinary artist. Siggi Loch, the head of his record label, ACT, remembers him getting "all these offers to play last winter, but he said, 'No, I'm taking three months off, I'm taking my kids out of school, and we're going on a world tour'."

Barring the obvious differences in picture quality (which also make clear the advantages of a dSLR working in good natural lighting), aren’t the similarities between the Nokia N96 and the N81 8GB as apparent?
Much better pics and a review to follow, in that order. For now, here’s another pic for your satisfaction:

Let’s hope the N96 isn’t as slow as its older counterpart. Dun dun dunnnn!!

If ever proof were needed that we love to hate our icons it comes in the form of the suggestion that Kate Winslet's fan base might be alienated by the fact that she is photographed, nearly naked and, more importantly, ultra-slender on the front cover of this month's 'Vanity Fair'. The star's image has not been "air-brushed" her people claim (true, obviously – it's all done digitally these days) although a certain amount of "colour correction" may have been involved.

A nearly two-decades old bit of space junk has been found in the Australian outback.
A solid rocket motor casing from a U.S. Delta 2 launch vehicle nearly 18 years after it reentered was found last July during a routine muster of cattle on a three-million-acre pastoral property.
First spotted by air from a Cessna aircraft flying over the property, the debris was later identified using a serial number - traced to the motor casing of a Delta 2 booster used on June 12, 1990 to deliver the Indian INSAT-1D into space from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida.
According to NASA’s Orbital Debris Quarterly News, the object joins similar solid rocket motor casings found in Saudi Arabia, Thailand and Argentina during the past several years.
