ABC announced some as-long-as-there's-please-God-no-SAG-strike midseason premiere dates yesterday. Among the highlights: The remake of Rob Thomas' Cupid, which was a highly praised flameout with Jeremy Piven in the 1998-99 season; Castle, in which Nathan Fillion is a mystery novelist who solves crimes (imagined scene at pitch meeting: "Get me a young male Angela Lansbury!"); and The Unusuals, billed as a dark-humored cop show, with Peter Tolan (of Rescue Me and dark-humored ABC cop show The Job) behind the scenes as a consultant. No date yet for Mike Judge's The Goode Family, naturally, since it's the ABC midseason show I'm most curious about. Excerpts from the release after the jump:

ABC ANNOUNCES PREMIERE DATES FOR NEW DRAMAS

“CASTLE,” “CUPID” AND “THE UNUSUALS”

ABC News' “Primetime: What Would You Do?” Returns Tuesday, January 6 at 10:00 p.m.

Three new dramas will be joining the ABC lineup: “Castle” on Monday, March 9 at 10:00 p.m.; “Cupid” on Tuesday, March 24 at 10:00 p.m.; and “The Unusuals” on Wednesday, April 8 at 10:00 p.m. In addition, ABC News' “Primetime: What Would You Do?” will return on Tuesday, January 6 at 10:00 p.m. (all times ET).

“Castle”

Wildly famous mystery novelist Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion, “Desperate Housewives”), who is bored with his own success, learns that a real-world copycat killer has started staging murder scenes depicted in his novels. Rick is soon questioned by NYPD Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic, “The Spirit”), a very bright, aggressive detective who keeps her investigations under tight rein. Rick and Kate's styles instantly clash, yet sparks begin to fly, leading both to danger and a hint of romance as Castle steps in to help find the killer. And once that case is solved, he and Beckett build upon their new relationship as they look to solve strange homicides in New York – as much fun as one can have with death & murder. Castle is kept grounded by his Broadway diva mother, Martha Rodgers (Susan Sullivan, “Dharma and Greg”) and quick-witted teenage daughter Alexis (Molly Quinn, “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story”).

Also starring in the series are Ruben Santiago-Hudson (“Law & Order”) as NYPD Captain Roy Montgomery, Tamala Jones (“Daddy Day Camp”) as Medical Examiner Lanie Parish, Jon Huertas (“Generation Kill”) as NYPD Detective Tony Esposito and Seamus Dever (“Army Wives”) as NYPD Detective Kevin Ryan.

“Castle” is produced by ABC Studios. Andrew Marlowe serves as executive producer/creator along with executive producers Armyan Bernstein, Barry Schindel, Rob Bowman and Laurie Zaks.

“Cupid”

“Cupid” is a romantic dramedy about Trevor Pierce (Bobby Cannavale, “Will & Grace”), a larger than life character who may or may not be the Roman god of love, Cupid, sent to earth to bring 100 couples together before he is allowed to return to Mt. Olympus. As fate would have it, Trevor is under the care of psychiatrist and self-help author Dr. Claire McCrae (Sarah Paulson, “The Spirit,” “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip”), who is also dedicated to helping lonely hearts find their soul mates. When it comes to true love, Claire believes it's all about friendship and compatibility, but for Trevor, heat and passion conquer all. Only time will tell who will win the battle for love.

“Cupid” stars Bobby Cannavale as Trevor, Sarah Paulson as Claire, Rick Gomez as Felix and Camille Guaty as Lita.

“Cupid” is produced by ABC Studios. Rob Thomas serves as executive producer/creator along with executive producers Jennifer Gwartz, Danielle Stokdyk, Dan Etheridge and Diane Ruggerio.

“The Unusuals”

In “The Unusuals,” it helps if a cop has a twisted sense of humor, because every moment could be your last. Just ask Casey Shraeger (Amber Tamblyn, “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants”), who started her day as an NYPD vice detective before unexpectedly being transferred to the homicide division. She quickly realizes that, not only does everyone in her new department have a distinct sense of humor, but also their own dirty little secrets.

The series stars Amber Tamblyn as Detective Casey Shraeger, Jeremy Renner as Detective Jason Walsh, Harold Perrineau as Detective Leo Banks, Josh Close as Detective Henry Cole, Monique Gabriela Curnen as Detective Allison Beaumont, Kai Lennox as Detective Eddie Alvarez, with Terry Kinney as Sergeant Harvey Brown and Adam Goldberg as Detective Eric Delahoy.

Created by Noah Hawley, “The Unusuals” is executive-produced by Hawley, Robert DeLaurentis and Peter O'Fallon, with Peter Tolan as an executive consultant on the series, which is produced by 26 Keys, Inc. in association with Sony Pictures Television for ABC.

“Primetime: What Would You Do?”

Suppose you witnessed a stranger slip a suspicious powder into his date's drink – would you tell his date? What if you saw a deli cashier exhibit racial discrimination to a customer trying to place an order – how would you respond? Using hidden cameras, “Primetime: What Would You Do?” sets up everyday scenarios and then captures people's reactions. Whether they're compelled to act or mind their own business, John Quiñones reports on their split-second – and often surprising – decision-making process.

Often people speculate on how they might act in a difficult situation, but this series looks at how they actually do in the face of everyday dilemmas that test their character and values. According to a 2008 Columbia Journalism Review essay, “Primetime: What Would You Do?” is “the flip side of reality TV… rather than show how people act in manufactured situations when they know they're being watched, they show us how people act when they don't.”

CastleWith all this talk that the fall season not exactly thrilling TV viewers (old shows losing viewers, not many new shows catching on in a big way, quirky favorites being canceled), it's probably time to start talking about what shows we can expect after the new year, at least from two of the networks.

On ABC we have Castle, with Nathan Fillion as a mystery novelist who helps police solve crimes (of course he does). It starts Monday, March 9 at 10pm. ABC also has The Unusuals, with Amber Tamblyn as a cop transferred to a new precinct filled with odd characters. It starts Wednesday, April 8 at 10pm. And as we've already told you, the new version of Cupid is coming to ABC too. It starts on Tuesday, March 24 at 10pm.

The new season of Lost premieres on Wednesday, January 21 at 9pm, and Scrubs comes back on Tuesday, January 6 at 9pm.

ABC managed to keep details about its Tyra Banks-Ashton Kutcher reality series True Beauty secret for a good six months. The suspense was not exactly killing us, but now that the network has finally let loose with a full description of the show, all we can say is: Um, yeah, sure.

The Washington Post-ABC News tracking poll concluded last night after 19 nights of interviewing with Barack Obama ahead of John McCain 53 to 44 percent among likely voters. That is identical to the margin in the tracks first release nearly more than two weeks ago. Over that time, neither candidates support varied by more than a point in either direction, as the contest stayed within a narrow range of seven to 11 points. More than 10,000 randomly-selected adults participated in one of these surveys, including more than 2,300 likely voters over the final four nights of the track. We would like to thank all of our respondents. Happy voting. If the 2008 presidential election were being held today, for whom would you vote? (Among likely voters)

Its hard to believe, but the 2008 presidential campaign will really be history by the end of tomorrow. As the candidates make their final pitches in late-night swing-state rallies, Barack Obama continues to hold a wide national lead over John McCain. The new Washington Post-ABC News tracking poll shows Obama up over McCain 53 to 44 percent among likely voters. Neither candidate has strayed more than a point off these figures over the course of the tracking poll, which started Oct. 16, the night after the third presidential debate. The candidates last-minute maneuverings are aimed at a dwindling group: A third of the probable electorate reports that theyve already having cast their ballot, and just 7 percent overall said they could change their minds before voting tomorrow. Those early voters remain an Obama-leaning group, 58 percent said they voted for the Illinois Democrat, 40 percent for McCain. Thats a flip

WaPo-ABC Tracking: Advantage Obama

Sen. Barack Obama holds a sizable advantage over John McCain just two days before the longest and most expensive presidential campaign in history comes to a close. After nearly two years of ads, rallies, debates and barnstorming, Obama is up 54 to 43 percent among likely voters, in the new Washington Post-ABC News tracking poll. And the ranks of persuadable voters has dwindled to 7 percent heading into the final day. One part of McCains steep challenge is that more than a quarter of the probable electorate has already voted - among these early birds, 59 percent said they voted for Obama, 40 percent for McCain. Obama has firmly reestablished his advantage on handling the economy (back up to 15 points) and beaten back a challenge on taxes (hes +11 there). On handling an unexpected major crisis, what had been a double-digit McCain lead to start the fall campaign, is

WaPo-ABC Tracking: Parsing the Ideological Divide

Voters perceptions of where Barack Obama and John McCain stand ideologically appear nearly set in stone, despite a massive barrage of late advertising aimed at shaking those views. The percentages calling the two about right in their ideological positioning is largely unchanged over the course of the campaign. More than half of voters in the new Washington Post-ABC News tracking poll, 56 percent, said Obamas views are in about the right spot on the ideological scale, 39 percent consider him too liberal and 3 percent think of him as too conservative for their taste. Fewer place McCain in the catbird seat: 42 percent said hes about right ideologically. About the same number, 41 percent, call the senator from Arizona too conservative, and he faces the additional difficulty of being viewed by a sizable group, 13 percent, as too liberal. These splits are about the same as they were 10 days

In a mere 56 hours, voters in Dixville Notch, NH will cast the first Election Day ballots of the 2008 contest, and in that time, John McCain will need to close a big gap among likely voters if he is to defeat Barack Obama. In todays Washington Post-ABC News daily tracking poll, Obama holds a 53 to 44 percent lead over McCain, unchanged from yesterday, and little in the survey suggests that trimming the margin would be an easy feat. For the first time, the slice of likely voters who report they will definitely vote for Obama has (by just a hair) now reached 50 percent, a milestone which George W. Bush never reached in Post-ABC tracking polls in 2004 or 2000, and the number of movable voters - those who said they could change their minds or who remain undecided - has slimmed to 7 percent. Half of all voters think John McCain has gone too far in criticizing Barack Obama, while most think Obama has been measured in his return volleys. To play catch-up, McCain, who has not lead in a national poll in six weeks (more than 155 polls according to pollster.com), has increased his hits on the Democratic nominee. Many now think he has crossed the line: 50 percent in a new Washington Post-ABC News poll said he has been overly critical. Fewer, 16 percent of all likely voters and 27 percent of Republicans said McCain should be attacking more. The rest said McCain has handled those attacks about right. On the flip side, two-thirds said Obama has criticized McCain at about the right level. About a quarter think he has gone too far; 44 percent of Republicans and 21 percent of independents feel this way. Independents are substantially more critical of McCains

We usually don't like to encourage the comedy YouTube jokes because none of them are funny, or it's something you can watch on the TeeVee, later, on your sofa or whatever, eating your "carry out." But this is great, although it's unrealistic to have an ultimately likable little girl in the role. Also, the dude who is married to Rebecca Romijn directed this. [YouTube/Big Lead]
